- 9,000 elementary students will receive free MedicAlert identification bracelets and memberships this year, through the No Child Without program. Over 43,000 students have benefitted from the No Child Without program since its inception in 2005.
- 2,200 Canadians who couldn’t otherwise afford it now have MedicAlert memberships through our Membership Assistance program.
- First responders, nurses and medical staff and medical associations are trained and educated to look for the MedicAlert identification and information.
One Member's Story
As someone with very severe allergies to several medications, including everyday Aspirin, I rely on MedicAlert to protect me. So many people count on me every day – my two wonderful children, my husband whom I’ve been with since we were 16, even my brother whom I’ve taken care of since he was 12 years old. I absolutely have to have a membership!
I’d been a member of MedicAlert for several years when my bracelet was stolen. It was like taking my lifeline. I couldn’t afford another one as I was unemployed at the time, and simply didn’t have the money to purchase another bracelet. You can imagine how terrified I was.
Unfortunately, having my bracelet stolen led to a situation where I could have died, because a nurse almost gave me a medication I’m violently allergic to.
I had to have a major operation, a hysterectomy. I was in the operating room and a nurse was preparing a routine medication they give you for that type of operation. When I found out what it was, I told her I was very allergic to all medications in that family. She told me not to worry. I was so scared! I really thought I might die, and my children would have to grow up without a mother.
Fortunately my family doctor and the surgeon came in just in time. My family doctor told the nurse I could not have that medication. I wish I had had my bracelet then, to show the nurse I knew what I was talking about! So I do know how important wearing a MedicAlert bracelet is.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of members like you, I now have a brand new bracelet that I wear ALL the time. Now my allergies and other medical conditions will be identified in an emergency, and paramedics will know exactly what to do to help. MedicAlert is so much a part of my life.
