What is a secure connection?
Secure connections are used to scramble the information sent and received by your computer. The Internet is composed of public computers connected together world-wide. When information is not scrambled with encryption, it's possible for someone to snoop along the way.
Encryption is performed by running intense mathematical calculations on the information being sent and received. The higher the bit count used, the harder the information is to potentially extract. Currently, the industry standard calls for 128-bit encryption.
Secure connections are used only when necessary due to the intense calculations required.
How do I identify a secure connection?
The site is secure when the "padlock" icon is in the closed position or when the address (URL) begins with https://.
