Major Budget Funding for MedicAlert's No Child Without program

March 19, 2008

Prime Minister Steven Harper

Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined Canadian MedicAlert Foundation President Dr. Martin Kabat, school delegates, parents and students at Cleardale Public School in London, Ontario to announce $5 million in funding for No Child Without.

The federal government is making a significant difference for a large number of children with chronic or potentially serious medical conditions by supporting the No Child Without program. No Child Without provides free MedicAlert protection for elementary-school children who suffer from potentially life-threatening allergies or medical conditions, and provides every child with a bracelet and membership that is designed to make critical information available in a medical emergency.

The No Child Without program was launched nationally in November 2006. This announcement is an important step toward offering the program to all of Canada's 12,000 elementary schools within five years, benefiting more than 300,000 children.

No Child Without

The No Child Without program is an exciting new program developed to ensure children across Canada from Junior Kindergarten up to 14 years of age with medical conditions, allergies or special needs are protected by the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation.

With the rise in childhood asthma, diabetes and allergies, parents and school administrators have reason to be concerned about the health and safety of their children. During the school day children can come in contact with up to five individuals responsible for their care and safety. Before and after school programs, recess, lunch and the classroom are often looked after by different individuals.

In case of a medical emergency, children can be the most vulnerable because they are often too young, too afraid or too hurt to express themselves. That is why parents often feel better knowing their children's MedicAlert identification can speak for them if they're not around.

MedicAlert is working with school boards across the country to implement the No Child Without program over the next 5 years. The program will be sponsored through the financial support of businesses and corporations to provide children the safety and security that comes with MedicAlert.
