A surprise call made Eileen appreciate MedicAlert even more.

My mother, Betty, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago. It’s been an emotionally devastating experience to see a loved one that’s so important in my life slip away.

I am now the guardian of my mom’s memories, and she trusts me to keep them safe. I relish the responsibility. It’s an amazing gift she has given me.

Over the years, we became much more than mother and daughter. At our bakery here in Petersburg, we worked side-by-side as co-workers, peers and friends. Mom still comes in to help. She has always loved to sing and dance, and we do both at the shop, convinced these passions make a better product.

It takes just one incident to make you a lifetime fan of MedicAlert. My experience happened earlier this Summer, when I got a call out of the blue from a MedicAlert representative.

She transferred me to a woman who notified me that my mom had wandered into a community centre and asked if I could pick her up.

Every day for the last thirty years, Mom has been walking the same road to the same park. This day, for some reason, she decided to go into a nearby community centre.

When I got to the centre, I heard music coming from inside. Knowing my mother well, I concluded that the music must have intrigued her to enter the building.

As soon as I walked in, I saw Mom merrily dancing with a staff member! I tapped her partner on the shoulder and traded places with him. Mom and I danced out of the centre, much to the delight of the cheering crowd!

As it turns out, conscientious staff members recognized my mom’s ID and called the toll-free number. Thanks to MedicAlert, my mom and I can continue to dance and sing in our bakery, taking life day by day, enjoying our company and collecting as many memories while we still can.

MedicAlert has become my mother’s lifeline, and a source of peace of mind for me. For that, I’m eternally grateful!
