We’re so proud to announce that we’ve partnered with the Winnipeg Police Service to bring the MedicAlert Connect Protect service to the city!
MedicAlert Connect Protect is a service aimed to help officers reunite lost or missing vulnerable individuals living with autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or a cognitive brain injury with their family or caregivers quickly.
The service is a first-of-its-kind in Manitoba, giving police officers 24-hour access to a MedicAlert subscriber’s photo, identity, past wandering history, and other vital emergency information through their MedicAlert medical IDs.
"The service has the potential to provide more real-time information to police and other people that are looking for individuals that may have wandered or become lost in the community”, said Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth at a press conference announcing the partnership.
“That's really important, particularly in a place like Canada and Winnipeg, where we're subject to real harsh climates and minutes matter."
More than 22,000 Manitobans are thought to live with dementia, according to Norma Kirkby, program director at the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
"We know that a person with dementia who is lost for an extended amount of time — whether it's summer, winter or any type of weather — is at great risk of potentially losing their lives," she said. "This really just enables a better chance of survival.”
Winnipeg is the latest Canadian community to embrace this amazing service since its launch less than 3 years ago.
(L to R): Supervisor/Sergeant, Randy Antonio, Winnipeg Police Service; Robert Ridge, President and CEO, MedicAlert Foundation Canada; Gavin D., MedicAlert subscriber; Chief Danny Smyth, Winnipeg Police Service; Norma Kirkby, Program Director, Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba; Catherine Horlock, Director of Strategic Alliances, MedicAlert Foundation Canada.
We’re working on many more and look forward to announcing some of them in the near future. Stay tuned!
