Nolan lives with multiple anaphylactic allergies, asthma and autism. He had his first life threatening reaction to peanuts at just six months old and his first serious asthma attack before his first birthday. He is also allergic to gelatin, which is an additive in almost everything from medicines to lollipops.
“When he first put it on, he was so little that there was almost zero chain left around his tiny wrist,” says his mother, Michelle, from their home outside Ottawa. “I was often questioned as to why, as a toddler, he needed a bracelet because he was always with me. But what people didn’t understand was the total reassurance that his bracelet brought. What would happen if I were in an accident? Who would speak for him? The first thing people do is hand a kid a lollipop!”
His MedicAlert bracelet is engraved with some of his conditions and the words “and others.” Using those two simple words is something that Michelle wouldn’t have the confidence to do with any other medical ID bracelet because only a MedicAlert service plan includes access to our 24/7 Emergency Hotline that relays key medical information to emergency responders within an average of five seconds of a call, in 140 languages.
“MedicAlert is more than just what’s engraved on the bracelet; the 24/7 Emergency Hotline is a lifeline connection to all of Nolan’s other medical needs,” says Michelle. “And he needs that voice to speak for him because sometimes his head is in a different place because of autism.”
But as a single mom to Nolan and his older sister, Michelle was relieved to learn about No Child Without, MedicAlert’s charitable program that gives fully subsidized protection to children between the ages of 4 and 14 who attend participating public and Catholic schools.
“I was going to school full time and working full time and making ends meet. When I found out about No Child Without, I burst into tears because I didn’t even know it existed,” says Michelle.
Initially founded in 2006, the longevity and reach of this much-needed program depends on the generosity of our donors across Canada. In the last 10 years, we’ve provided fully subsidized MedicAlert protection to more than 66,000 children across Canada. With your generous support, we can fulfil our vision of protecting the more than 300,000 children with medical conditions in over 12,000 elementary schools across Canada.
“I am so grateful for the donors that make this possible for the people like us who need it.”
