Michael Stephenson
Former Board Chair, MedicAlert Foundation Canada
I had the privilege of serving on the MedicAlert Board, including as Chair, beginning in the mid-1990s. Looking back, it was a time of important change and growth for the organization.
When I joined the Board, there was a strong focus on expanding membership across the country. At the time, the lifetime membership fee was $26.00, and it became clear that the Foundation could not continue to sustain its 24/7 emergency hotline services and programs on a one-time fee model. After much discussion, the Board agreed to move to an annual fee, while remaining mindful of affordability for some members.
As technology began to evolve around the year 2000, we explored whether there might be alternatives to the bracelet. In the end, we determined that the bracelet remained the most reliable and effective solution.
We also worked to expand programs that would better serve Canadians. The No Child Without program, supporting children with health conditions, was introduced during this time. It has since evolved into what is now known as MedicAlert Kids, and its impact has grown significantly, including receiving $5 million in federal funding in the years following my tenure.
During this period, the Canadian and U.S. Boards met in San Francisco and Toronto to review the future of the 24/7 emergency hotline service, including its security and long-term sustainability. To help ensure continuity between the two organizations, I joined the U.S. Board as well.
While serving as Chair, I had a bracelet made with just my name and the hotline number, which I wore when travelling abroad. It gave my wife peace of mind in case of an emergency. Today, I still wear my bracelet due to some medical issues I’ve experienced over the years—proof that age does, indeed, catch up with all of us.
One of the highlights of my time as Chair was the opportunity to connect with fellow board members across the country and internationally. My travels took me to Calgary, Nova Scotia, San Francisco, and London, England. It was a privilege to be part of an organization that helps people in such meaningful ways.
Congratulations to MedicAlert on 65 years of providing this essential service. I am certain that Dr. Marion Collins and his wife, Chrissie, would be proud of the dedication shown by the many board members who have carried forward the mission they began in Turlock, California.
I would also like to thank Leslie McGill, CEO, for the opportunity to contribute to the 65th Anniversary celebration in May. I wish her and the Board continued success as they build on MedicAlert’s strong foundation for the future.
