We can take away the worry of wandering
Dementia, according to the World Health Organization, is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the world… yes, top 10! It is also one of the fastest growing disease groups in Canada. In fact, the dementia population in Canada is expected to double in the next 6 years. It’s also well known that 60% of people living with dementia will wander. In fact, more than 40% of the calls to our 24/7 Emergency Hotline are for people who have gone missing.

About MedicAlert Safe & Found
MedicAlert has one of the largest databases in the world that captures specific details about people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. For more than a decade, we’ve managed Canada’s National Wandering Registry, and in 2023, more than 40% of calls to our 24/7 Emergency Hotline were related to individuals who became lost because of dementia-related disorientation.
In 2022, in partnership with the School of Public Health at the University of Waterloo, MedicAlert undertook a first-of-its-kind research study using data from the National Wandering Registry as a starting point.
Thanks to this research we’ve uncovered a clearer picture of patterns related to persons living with dementia. Here’s some of what we learned:
- 40% of individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias tend to become lost in the summer months
- 46% of individuals with dementia are prone to become lost in the afternoon
- 30% of individuals with dementia are prone to become lost in the evening
- The mean time from signing up for Safe & Found and a person’s first instance of becoming lost is 347 days
Further research will help us to develop data-enriched technologies that will keep people who wander safe and reduce the emotional stress of always wondering if today is the day a loved one will go missing. With the dementia population expected to continue growing, Canada’s healthcare system and individual caregivers face an incredible burden. MedicAlert’s Safe & Found program exists to help ease this burden.
