Penney P. never considered herself lucky—until lightning struck not once, but twice.
“As soon as MedicAlert launched its 50/50 Raffles, I started buying tickets,” she says. “I believe in MedicAlert.”
And her belief paid off. Penney won not one, but two MedicAlert 50/50 raffles: the Nifty50 Halloween Edition in October 2024 and the Blossom & Win Edition in April.
“The first time, I was in shock—I thought maybe it wasn’t real…But when it sank in, I couldn’t believe it. Then it happened again. Total shock. I’ve never been a lucky person—especially not that lucky!”
But for Penney, these raffles aren’t just about luck or prize money. They’re a way to give back.
“I know MedicAlert helps kids and vulnerable people who can’t afford this necessity in life,” she says. “When I buy a ticket, I know my money is going somewhere meaningful.”
She also knows, firsthand, how powerful that impact can be.
After undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass—a surgery where a small stomach pouch is connected directly to the small intestine—Penney wears her MedicAlert ID every day. The surgery means she cannot be safely given a blind nasogastric (NG) tube in an emergency. Instead, she would need to be intubated using a lighted scope.
That crucial piece of information? It’s engraved on her MedicAlert bracelet.
“If I can’t speak for myself, my MedicAlert ID speaks for me,” Penney explains. “It could save my life.”
As for the winnings? They came at exactly the right moments.
“In November, I had just split rent with my sister—we were able to catch up on bills. In April, I bought wool—I love to knit and crochet—and helped my nephew get his car on the road.”
Now she’s aiming for a third win—but win or lose, Penney is in it for the long haul.
“I’ll keep buying. Maybe I’ll strike it lucky again. But even if I don’t, I know I’m supporting something important in MedicAlert.”
