Position Overview and Primary Objectives:

The Development Associate is an exceptional communicator with the ability to inspire confidence and trust with individuals, foundations and corporate stakeholders. Collaborating with the senior leadership team to help develop creative funding opportunities to advance MedicAlert’s strategic plan, the officer will research and write a variety of materials, including tailored proposals, presentations, correspondence, briefing notes, stewardship report, and plans.

This role will contribute to the writing and submission of grant applications and reports, the organization’s annual fundraising and donor recognition activities, and is responsible for carrying out the administration of the donor database. The Development Associate works collaboratively across departments on grant activities while stewarding relationships with new and existing donors, and provides support to the Vice President, Communications and Philanthropy and CEO on cultivating and recognizing major gift donors.

The Development Associate will initiate prospect research and manage the donor cycle from identification through to solicitation and stewardship ensuring gifts are acknowledged in a timely manner. Resourceful and independent, with a strong ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, the Development Associate has strong capacity to organize and manage a diverse range of assignments and projects with efficiency, yet thorough attention to detail and execution.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to the following:

Grant Writing and Proposal Development:
  • Research and identify prospective funders, including foundations, corporations, and government agencies using wealth screening tools, directories and annual reports/websites of similar organizations to identify potential donors
  • Leads the writing and submission process of compelling, well-researched, and customized grant proposals that align with MedicAlert’s strategic goals and programmatic needs.
  • Collaborate with program teams and leadership to develop key performance metrics and budgets for proposals.
  • Ensure that all grant submissions are completed on time and meet donor guidelines and application requirements.
Grant Management and Reporting:
  • Manage the grant application process, including tracking deadlines, submissions, and funder communications.
  • Work with Finance and Program teams to ensure proper stewardship and compliance with grant requirements, including preparing reports and financial updates for donors.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for grants, ensuring accurate reporting on progress and outcomes.
  • Create dashboards to monitor grant performance, analyze trends, and communicate results to leadership and donors.
Constituent Management System (CMS) Utilization:
  • Utilize MedicAlert’s CMS (HubSpot) to maintain detailed records of all donor and grant-related data, ensuring that all information is accurate and up to date.
  • Ensure that CMS data is organized for easy access, helping with segmentation and cultivation of prospects for future funding.
  • Collaborate with the IT team to ensure that donor and grant records are properly categorized and tracked, leveraging data to inform fundraising strategies.
Prospect Research:
  • Conduct in-depth prospect research and qualify prospective donors using tools such as Kindsight, Grant Connect, and other relevant platforms to identify new foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities, as well as new high-potential individuals.
  • Assess the financial capacity, affinity, interests and history of potential donors to determine the best approach for securing funding.
Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with foundation representatives and corporate partners.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all grant-related inquiries with the exception of government, ensuring proactive and transparent communication with funders.
  • Prepare detailed stewardship reports that demonstrate the impact of funding and keep donors engaged with MedicAlert’s programs.
Team Collaboration and Strategy Development:
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure proposals are aligned with program needs and priorities.
  • Stay informed on best practices in philanthropy, grant writing, and donor engagement, integrating new strategies into the grant writing process.
Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Skills & Qualifications:

Education:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in grant writing, with a proven track record in securing funding from foundations, corporations, and government.
  • Proficiency in conducting prospect research and analyzing donor data to inform strategy
  • Strong experience with constituent management systems (CMS), including the ability to run reports, manage donor data, and track KPIs.
  • Experience preparing and presenting plans and dashboards to monitor progress against grant and fundraising goals.
Skills:
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to develop and interpret reports, dashboards, and KPIs to track performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of constituent management systems (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce) and the ability to use them to track and report on donor and grant data.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with both internal teams and external funders.
  • Experience in the health sector is an asset.
