PEI Municipal Police Partner with MedicAlert to Share Critical Information

“MedicAlert is a vital link between first responders and the community when faster, informed action makes all the difference and we are honoured to assist police services across the country,” said Françoise Faverjon-Fortin, CEO of MedicAlert Foundation Canada.

MedicAlert Connect Protect provides police quick 24/7 access to a subscriber’s emergency profile. This service gives police first responders, through their dispatcher, critical intelligence including recent photo, physical descriptions, wandering history, behavior management strategies such as anxiety triggers and de-escalation techniques, as well as caregiver information. The information will now be accessible to municipal police in Kensington, Summerside and Charlottetown.

“Charlottetown Police Services is committed to continual improvement of services to those we serve, and as policing agencies we are pleased to enter in to this partnership with MedicAlert Foundation Canada,” said Charlottetown Police Services Chief Paul Smith. “Information is a key component to policing. Forging this partnership will give our frontline officers quick database access to important information that will enable us to assist vulnerable persons and provide positive outcomes.”

Having access to this data through the MedicAlert identification adds an additional layer of protection for those MedicAlert subscribers living in PEI, as well as those visiting PEI as officers called to an emergency situation will have access to timely information which could save a life.

“Summerside Police Services is very pleased to partner with MedicAlert Foundation Canada, to assist in introducing this critical service to communities across the nation,” said Summerside Police Services Chief of Police David Poirier. “MedicAlert helps to ensure emergency responders and healthcare professionals have the right information to care for you by checking the database, and also helps to safeguard loved ones who may wander away from home because of a medical condition. Society is very much in need of this wonderful program.”

This partnership between Policing agencies and MedicAlert has proven effective in other Canadian communities in assisting individuals living with autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, mental health related issues, and cognitive brain injuries.

“The Kensington Police Service is very excited to be able to access the information that we need immediately,” said Kensington Chief of Police Lewis Sutherland. “This will assist the dispatchers and the police officers with gathering and disseminating the proper information needed for locating the lost or missing individuals. I'm very pleased that we have had the opportunity to partner with MedicAlert.”

The Police Chiefs of the City of Charlottetown, the City of Summerside and the Town of Kensington, along with MedicAlert representatives, will host an official launch of the partnership on Tuesday, July 30 at 11 a.m., at the Charlottetown Police Services headquarters at 10 Kirkwood Drive. MedicAlert will also be holding a voluntary sign-up session at the same location from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and again on Wednesday, July 31 at the same location from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Residents can sign up to be MedicAlert subscribers and receive a discount on their first-year service plan and a MedicAlert identification.
